Chefas Projects is honored to welcome Portland-based artist Laura Burke with her inaugural gallery exhibit "Bright Blue His Jacket is, and His Boots are Yellow." The title makes direct reference to Tolkien's classic novel "The Fellowship of the Ring," in which hobbits can hear the eccentric Tom Bombadil singing those very words outside their door. Bombadil is a mystical character with human attributes and Burke's work follows suit, remaining vaguely familiar as it imparts a discreet sense of magic.

In the artist's own words: “My intention with this body of work is to capture scenes that feel like fairytales. Each painting and drawing portrays a moment instilled with subtle (or not-so-subtle) magic. They’re household objects and bits of nature that I’ve arranged despite the laws of perspective to invoke another world. A blue jacket and yellow boots aren't inherently magical, but they can be.”

Laura Burke was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. Burke received a BFA in printmaking at the Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) in 2015. She is currently living and working in Brooklyn, New York.

The opening reception for Bright Blue His Jacket Is, and His Boots Are Yellow will be held at Chefas Projects on Friday, February 17th from 5-8pm. Masks and social distancing practices are encouraged. Chefas Projects is located in Portland, Oregon at 134 SE Taylor Street on the first floor of the Taylor Works building. The exhibition will be on view through March 18, 2023 and is free and open to the public.
