OREGON ARTS WATCH

THE JEALOUS CURATOR

Chefas Projects is delighted to present Wheel of Life by Betsy Walton, marking the artist’s third solo exhibition with the gallery. Leaning deeply into the influence that astrology and tarot holds over her work, Walton explores the rich symbolism and experiential themes of the twelve astrological houses through a series of new paintings.

In astrology, the twelve houses represent different areas of life – from identity and self-expression to relationships, career, and the subconscious. Coinciding with a variety of influences – such as specific zodiac signs or elements assigned to each one – these houses build fields of experience that influence the planets that pass through them, creating a framework for understanding personal growth and cosmic alignment.

Using this as a point of inspiration, Walton embarks on a personal exploration of the houses in her unique and detail-laiden style for Wheel of Life, welcoming viewers to journey with her. Walton’s process for Wheel of Life develops the associated elements and influences of each house into a rich visual language, balancing research and intuition to build her compositions around the qualities that resonate with her. Each painting – through bold colors, organic forms, and layered compositions – reflects spontaneity and self reflection, mirroring the fluid and dynamic nature of the houses themselves.

The opening reception for Wheel of Life will take place at Chefas Projects on Friday, April 11, 2025, from 5-8 pm. Located in Portland, Oregon, at 134 SE Taylor Street on the first floor of the Taylor Works building, Chefas Projects invites the public to explore this unique exhibition, which will be on view through May 3, 2025.
