Chefas Projects is delighted to present The Angels Pool Their Tips At Night, a captivating series of new abstract paintings by Portland artist Kristen Diederich that attest to the awe of the natural world. This exhibition marks Diederich’s first time showing with the gallery.

The Angels Pool Their Tips At Night is Diederich’s testimony to the symbiotic dance of flora and fauna within nature, particularly her admiration for insights gleaned from migratory birds. With a practice deeply rooted in observation, Diederich’s gestural brush strokes evoke the lyrical, excited movement of wind rushing through trees or the invisible traces of flight patterns in the sky. Colors tapped from nature blur together with movement, shaking and rustling in the breeze.

Diederich’s paintings layer tight and sweeping swathes of textured paint, allowing viewers to relish in fine details and abstract mark-making. However, they are also a call to look towards the larger landscape – to think of and feel the fluid essence of existence that permeates the atmosphere. “In my process there is an empathy for that which isn’t human,” explains Diederich, “reflected in the quickness of the instrument. From this body of work I’ve developed an understanding that nothing within nature is accidental but rhetorical.”

Kristen Diederich (b. 1994) is an artist, writer, and forever observer based in Portland, Oregon. From a young age, Diederich learned to paint from her mother, and currently works from her studio in North Portland. She has exhibited in venues on both the West and East Coast such as Carnation Contemporary, after / time, 1122 Gallery, The Waldoboro Inn, and The Old Church. In addition to her work as a painter, Diederich holds a background in creative writing, operating as the co-founder and organizer of Surprise, Surprise, a live poetry reading series featuring a variety of Portland poets.

The opening reception for The Angels Pool Their Tips At Night will take place at Chefas Projects on Friday, November 1, 2024, from 5-8 pm. Located in Portland, Oregon, at 134 SE Taylor Street on the first floor of the Taylor Works building, Chefas Projects invites the public to explore this unique exhibition, which will be on view through November 30, 2024.
