Chefas Projects is delighted to unveil Joseph, a group exhibition curated by Jeroen Smeets from The Jaunt. The show highlights the creative endeavors of five distinguished artists who participated in The Jaunt’s 2023 Summer Camp program: Tim Biskup, Jillian Evelyn, William LaChance, Macarena Luzi, and Stevie Shao.

In September 2023, The Jaunt brought together these artists in the quaint town of Joseph, Oregon. The annual Jaunt Summer Camp aimed to inspire participants with the town's scenic landscapes, serene nature, and collaborative atmosphere. Hailing from St Louis, Seattle, Los Angeles, and Detroit, the artists, who had not previously explored this part of East Oregon, found themselves captivated by its beauty.

Over five days, the artists bonded through exploration and mutual discovery of their surroundings. Hikes and horseback rides in the neighboring mountains facilitated camaraderie, while a shared workspace at the Jennings Hotel allowed them to witness and engage in each other's creative processes.

The exhibition, appropriately titled Joseph, serves as a testament to the artists' five transformative days together and the collective fruits of their creativity. Each artist translated their experiences and observations into a series of original works and a limited edition silkscreen print, all of which will be showcased at Chefas Projects in this collaborative exhibition with The Jaunt.

Featured Artists:

Tim Biskup - Renowned for his unique blend of abstract and figurative painting, Biskup, operating from his studio, Face Guts, in Los Angeles, consistently pushes artistic boundaries. His distinctive style, showcased in drawings, sculptures, vinyl toys, animations, and more, has gained recognition in magazines, exhibitions, and diverse artistic realms.

Jillian Evelyn - Exploring the challenges of womanhood and contemporary societal expectations, Evelyn contorts the female figure through graphic shapes and a limited color palette. Originally from Detroit and now based in Los Angeles, her journey from visual expression to full-time painting is reflected in her poignant artworks.

William LaChance - Embracing the collision of disparate elements, LaChance creates hybrid, unfamiliar experiences through his paintings. Drawing inspiration from graphic design, fashion, art history, and nature, his works blur the lines between high art and applied arts, spanning diverse methods and materials.

Macarena Luzi - The Argentinian artist effortlessly captures attention with her pop-inspired feeling and vibrant color palette, applied across various mediums from painting and prints to textile design and illustrations. Based in Los Angeles, she shares a studio with former Jaunt artist Sebastian Curi.

Stevie Shao - Based in Seattle, Shao blends her love for the Pacific Northwest's plant and animal life with her Chinese heritage and bold colors. Her artwork, characterized by a vivid palette and folk art-inspired imagery, serves as a powerful medium to advocate for environmental stewardship, racial justice, and preserving historic community roots.

Don't miss the opportunity to experience the rich tapestry of creativity born from the unique collaboration between these five talented artists. Joseph opens at Chefas Projects on Friday, March 1, 2024 from 5-8pm. Located in Portland, Oregon, at 134 SE Taylor Street on the first floor of the Taylor Works building, Chefas Projects invites the public to explore this unique exhibition, which will be on view through March 30, 2024.
