Chefas Projects is delighted to present Abstract Thought, an exhibition of six contemporary approaches to abstraction. New works by Bobby Adams, Jordan Clark, Nate Ethington, Cody Hudson, Erik Railton, and John Vitale span paintings on canvas to steel sculpture, exploring unique perspectives on realms of the urban, the inner mind, and abstract art itself.

The language of abstract art has always relied on tenets of shape, color, gesture, and composition as its core vocabulary, and each artist who takes on the task of communicating through abstraction inevitably wrestles with how to transform these elements into something of their own. This is what makes abstraction so rich and thrilling – it offers an exciting glimpse into the mind of the artist, a snapshot of how they translate the world around them into their own vibrant visual language.

Looking to the natural world, new paintings by Bobby Adams evoke the rich gradient shifts of sunsets in the Portland skies, professing his deep love for color. Also looking at his surroundings, Jordan Clark creates dynamic compositions through the process of layering and revealing, often inspired by the urban environment around him. The paintings of John Vitale contemplate the complexity of the human experience, exploring negative space and texture as tangible narratives of time.

Oftentimes artists reflect the language of abstraction inward, using its own vocabulary to describe itself and the process of creating with it. Sculptures by Cody Hudson highlight the delicate beauty of shape and monochromatic color through careful compositions in powder-coated steel. Erik Railton turns his attention to color theory in his geometric paintings, demonstrating how shade and hue affect our perception. Paintings by Nate Ethington build layers upon layers of thin paint and drawn marks, utilizing the process of accumulation to touch on notions of relationships and conversation.

The opening reception for Abstract Thought will take place at Chefas Projects on Friday, December 6, 2024, from 5-8 pm. Located in Portland, Oregon, at 134 SE Taylor Street on the first floor of the Taylor Works building, Chefas Projects invites the public to explore this unique exhibition, which will be on view through December 28, 2024.
