Stephanie Chefas Projects is delighted to welcome back Portland-based artist Yellena James for her fifth solo exhibit with the gallery, "Origin." Through the use of immersive color and expert technique, James continues to navigate a vast world of her own creation. To behold each work is to likewise envelope yourself in a seemingly infinite expanse of color, image, and detail. Each piece transcends its imaginative underpinnings to take on a vivid and life-like dimension, as though the artist herself is a mere visitor in this fully-realized dimension.
"My latest works explore the origin of living things, real and imagined, pondering the true source of sentience and existence," says James. "From a pool of primordial particles and varying elements, bonding and evolving, moving together or pulling apart, somehow an imaginary ecosystem comes to life. I attempt to capture the instance of inception, and freeze it as though pressing pause in the middle of a chemical reaction, and I wonder if these lifeforms are forced into existence by their own needs and desires or the needs and desires of the forces themselves.”
Opening Day for Origin will be held at Stephanie Chefas Projects on Saturday, November 13th from 1-6pm. Masks are required and social distancing practices are encouraged. Stephanie Chefas Projects is located in Portland, Oregon at 305 SE 3rd Avenue on the second floor of the Urban Row building. The exhibition will be on view through December 11, 2021 and is free and open to the public.
