On April 6th, Ryan Bubnis returns to Stephanie Chefas Projects with FROM THE GROUND UP, a striking assemblage of new paintings, textiles, and ceramics from the Portland based artist. Bold, graphic, and whimsical in approach, Bubnis' work harkens back to the creative spirit of his youth, exploring personal themes of skate culture, music and human connectivity. Concurrently, the persistence of influences from DIY culture, illustration, and art history broadens the iconographic spectrum, bringing us all along for the ride.
Demonstrating a mastery of form and palette alike, Bubnis blends singular images against unmistakable backdrops of lustrous color. Radiating from each work is an inviting aura that casts a warm and amicable glow over the viewer. As a result, the emotional connection between creator and perceiver remains palpable. Bubnis invites you into his world by drawing from a well of familiar guideposts, and the positive vibes are simply everywhere.
The exhibition bears the same title of an ongoing zine that Bubnis started in 2009. "The self-published zine has always been an outlet for me to share my thoughts, dreams, fears, and images in a way I hoped connected with people", states Bubnis. "I created this new series of paintings and sculptures with the same spirit and see this work as a tribute to the DIY movements that inspired me to make work in the first place. FROM THE GROUND UP is dedicated to all the dreamers and doers out there. Keep making things, keep changing things, keep pushin', and keep fighting the good fight!"
The opening reception for FROM THE GROUND UP will be held at Stephanie Chefas Projects on Friday, April 6th from 7-10pm. Stephanie Chefas Projects is located in Portland, Oregon at 305 SE 3rd Avenue on the second floor of the Urban Row building. The exhibition will be on view through April 28th, 2018 and is free and open to the public.
