This October, Stephanie Chefas Projects is delighted to present Portland artist Mia Farrington in the Gallery Annex with The In Between. In her recent collection of work, Farrington explores the themes of perfectionism and facades. The paintings represent a metaphor in her life in which she is often searching for balance and simplicity in a society fraught with perfectionism and high expectations of women, more specifically of mothers.

For this series, the color in each painting is the same hue but a different intensity. This is meant to represent her search for balance with lightness and darkness, weakness and strength and the feminine and masculine energies within herself.

The exploration of perfectionism and facades can be seen with the shapes and the surface. The shapes are controlled and contained by a continuous hard edge which gives the illusion of a perfect line on a smooth, clean surface. It is only when the viewer comes up close and connects with the paintings that they will notice all the intimate imperfections. The paintings become about relationships and perception. They show how the colors work together, how the shapes relate to each other and how they both communicate with the surface and the texture of the linen.

The opening reception for The In Between will be held at Stephanie Chefas Projects on Friday, October 5th from 7-10pm. Stephanie Chefas Projects is located in Portland, Oregon at 305 SE 3rd Avenue on the second floor of the Urban Row building. The exhibition will be on view through October 26th, 2018 and is free and open to the public.
