This September, Stephanie Chefas Projects welcomes back abstract artist Mia Farrington for her second solo exhibition with the gallery, PLACE. Color remains the focus in each of Farrington’s paintings, whereby she wraps vivid hues within a continuous hard edge against a raw backdrop. Drawing inspiration from multiple sources while demonstrating masterful control, she uses color as a gateway to perception. How these colors influence each other, how they communicate with the surface, and the texture of the canvas all play a significant role at every stage of creation.

With PLACE, Farrington continues her exploration of relationships as both an underlying concept and motivating force. How does an artist reflect thoughts and feelings through the abstract use of color and shape? How does one translate conversations and emotions into visual elements? How are relationships with both the artist and others affected by a sense of belonging? These questions lie at the very core of her work and thus provide for a recurring motif. Just as one might find answers in the colors and patterns of nature, her paintings likewise tell a story through the use of diverging shapes and brilliant hues. Each color represents not just a specific source of inspiration but a variation on what the concept of Place might mean to the viewer as well.

For this collection, Farrington draws upon hues from her time spent in the Painted Hills region of the John Day Fossil Beds. The red (iron-oxide-rich laterite soil), gold, black (lignite soil), sage, lavender (caused from rhyolitic lava) and white are all traced to similar colors found in this East-Central area of Oregon. With each visit, these colors would change slightly depending on time of year, moisture levels, and where the sunlight hits the hills. This can also be found in the paintings as each color has variations of the original hue.

Mia Farrington received a BA in Studio Art with a concentration in painting and minor in Art History from the University of Vermont. Her work has been exhibited and featured in Portland, New York, and Seattle, and has been collected throughout the US. She currently lives and works in Portland, Oregon.

Opening Day for PLACE will be held at Stephanie Chefas Projects on Saturday, September 4th from 1-6pm. Masks are required and social distancing practices are encouraged. Stephanie Chefas Projects is located in Portland, Oregon at 305 SE 3rd Avenue on the second floor of the Urban Row building. The exhibition will be on view through October 2, 2021 and is free and open to the public.
