Chefas Projects is excited to welcome back Mako Miyamoto for Vein of Salt, a solo exhibition of new photographs and video work. Continuing his experiments with infrared photography, Vein of Salt presents new perspectives on somewhat familiar landscapes, revealing hidden cartographies just beneath the surface of our perception.
Vein of Salt immerses viewers in the liminal, rendering geographical landscapes anew through the transformative perspective of infrared photography. Employing a technique that captures wavelengths of light that lie just below the visible threshold, Miyamoto’s images expose a previously invisible world – a world rife with unexpected hues and rich textures that go otherwise unnoticed. “Suspended between the known and the newly perceived, the viewer is invited to wonder where the self is anchored,” explains Miyamoto, “prompting a search for our own coordinates within this spectral whole.”
Across the work, distinguishable boundaries become blurry – designations between the organic and the geological, the microscopic and the colossal, dissolve. Fractal-like forms reflect structures found in both the natural world and within our own biological systems, generating a fundamentally unifying ethos between the two in their alignment. Vein of Salt presents a strange-yet-familiar world characterized by deeper orders of repetition, recursion, and hidden structures, and all the while undeniably alive.
The opening reception for Vein of Salt will take place at Chefas Projects on Friday, June 13 from 5-8 pm. Located in Portland, Oregon, at 134 SE Taylor Street on the first floor of the Taylor Works building, Chefas Projects invites the public to explore this unique exhibition, which will be on view through July 12.
