Through quiet, intimate scenes illuminated by the light of the moon, Kyle Lee’s paintings touch themes of memory and place to explore an anticipatory anxiety that lies just below the surface.

Washed in the rich blues and purples brought only by a winter’s midnight moon, Lee pulls its viewers into scenes of in-between spaces: an open door that leads to a darkened room; an empty kitchen with a lonely pot still on the stove; figures with backs turned or distant gazes that look beyond what is present. And in these quiet and intimate moments, we are left wondering about the things these places hold – the memories buried within them along with the uncertain anxiety of wondering if it will be possible to return to them. Yet at the same time, Lee’s paintings push us to also wonder about what comes next: both the midnight hour and the new moon mark the ending of one cycle and the beginning of a brand new one. Dwelling in this transitional space, each scene is a suspended moment caught somewhere between the past and the future, neither here nor there.
