Artist Feature on It’s Nice That

Interview on Future Positive by Julie Simon

On April 13th, Stephanie Chefas Projects is delighted to welcome Brooklyn based painter Kristin Texeira for her first solo exhibition with the gallery entitled Caramels. Texeira fashions abstractions out of interactions with both people and places, incorporating color, sketching, and writing to creatively capture, document, and preserve memories. The artist begins with personal writing before focusing on color to translate these stories into paintings. Her works take the form of what she calls “memory maps,” which attempt to remedy nostalgia and serve as vessels for viewers to relive certain moments again and again.

Caramels spans ten years of the artist's ideas, emotions, predictions, frustrations, investigations, and manifestations. Texeira's vivid and often surreal style invokes a folk influence while making expert use of color and imagery. Mysterious signifiers burst forth from the well of experience, taking their place on the seat of infinity. Collectively or individually, the work exists in a proverbial ether. In the end, past, present, and future are all the same.

The show's purposefully arbitrary title was inspired by a scene in "Good Will Hunting," during which Will uses caramels to poke fun at societal norms. Taking that notion to heart, Texeira exposes the arbitrary nature of time itself. Her exploration is rendered in a deceptively stark aesthetic, revealing more and more dimension upon repeat viewings.

The opening reception for Caramels will be held at Stephanie Chefas Projects on Saturday, April 13th from 5-8pm. Stephanie Chefas Projects is located in Portland, Oregon at 305 SE 3rd Avenue on the second floor of the Urban Row building. The exhibition will be on view through May 18th, 2019 and is free and open to the public.
