Chefas Projects is delighted to present From the Still, a series of new paintings by Jordan Clark. Building lush compositions that bring together color, movement, and notions of place, From the Still explores the quiet tension between stillness and motion, memory and moment.

Often drawing inspiration from the layered aesthetics of urban landscapes — from graffiti-covered train cars and weather-worn walls — Clark’s practice is rooted in the acts of layering and removal. In this new body of work, Clark builds on these gestures with a contemplative turn, conjuring an atmosphere of in-between moments of action: the hush of the studio, the rhythm of jazz on a rainy day, the way time seems to suspend as colors settle into form.

Both energetic and meditative, the works in From the Still invite viewers into an abstract terrain that feels familiar yet unplaceable, echoing the textures of lived experience. “The spaces created within the paintings are informed by the colors, shapes and lines found in my experiences,” says Clark of his process. “Through the act of painting I begin to really zoom in and pay attention to specific edges, and how the paint will sit, bleed or spread on the surface.” The works in From the Still become landscapes of feeling, shaped as much by absence as by presence.

The opening reception for From the Still will take place at Chefas Projects on Friday, May 9, 2025, from 5-8 pm. Located in Portland, Oregon, at 134 SE Taylor Street on the first floor of the Taylor Works building, Chefas Projects invites the public to explore this unique exhibition, which will be on view through June 7, 2025.
