This September, Stephanie Chefas Projects is delighted to introduce LA based artist Jillian Evelyn in the Gallery Annex with 'Not Necessary'. Evelyn's artwork is filled with contorted and confined female figures, delivering a distinctive palette of both soft and contrasting hues, and a focus on simple shape and form. In her latest collection of work, the artist reflects on her own personal journey and the purgatory of trying to meet people's expectations, and ultimately finding acceptance of one's self.

"In my work, I break down the body into shapes—a mix of curves and sharp edges to create an image of what being a woman feels like for me", says Evelyn. "We aren’t all soft around the edges and the body doesn’t have to represent something sexual. We have these limbs to hold us up and keep us in place. But that’s just my work now, and I know my feelings towards myself will evolve. I’m really looking forward to my personal growth and how it will continue to affect my work."

Originally from Chelsea, Michigan, Jillian Evelyn (b. 1987) studied Illustration at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan. Soon after college, Evelyn began work as a designer for footwear giants Converse and TOMS. In 2015, Evelyn decided to leave the corporate world, move to Los Angeles, and begin focus on her own artwork. By the end of 2017, Evelyn had a sold out show at the Juxtapoz Clubhouse in Miami Basel, numerous solo shows under her belt, and a mounting buzz humming behind her rapidly growing career. Jillian Evelyn currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California.

The opening reception for 'Not Necessary' will be held at Stephanie Chefas Projects on Friday, September 7th from 7-10pm. Stephanie Chefas Projects is located in Portland, Oregon at 305 SE 3rd Avenue on the second floor of the Urban Row building. The exhibition will be on view through September 28, 2017 and is free and open to the public.
