This March, Stephanie Chefas Projects is delighted to present Portland based artist Jeff Sheridan in the Gallery Annex with 'Spirit in Matter'.  In his latest collection of work, Sheridan explores repetitious, self-organizing symmetries in the natural world. Affected by elemental conditions, natural objects organize in a way that is neither crystalline nor inorganic. Water erosion sculpts mountains, and life populates the resulting fertile pockets. Thematic and fluid, these natural symmetries are accentuated through repetition in the artist's work, which in turn creates texture and form structures in negative space. 

"Encouraged by meditations and comprised of groups of thoughts, these symmetrical textures are largely spontaneous and inform the work I make as it is being created," states Sheridan. "The resulting marks avoid the overtly geometric while keeping in mind that self-organizing principles are the source of unchecked processes in the universe. The objects I create refer to life, erosion and become abstract structures that grow, spread, and disappear."

The opening reception for 'Spirit in Matter' will be held at Stephanie Chefas Projects on Friday, March 2nd from 7-10pm. Stephanie Chefas Projects is located in Portland, Oregon at 305 SE 3rd Avenue on the second floor of the Urban Row building. The exhibition will be on view through March 31st, 2018 and is free and open to the public.
