Chefas Projects is delighted to present Everything Takes Forever, the solo debut exhibition with the gallery by Los Angeles-based sculptor Godeleine de Rosamel. The title not only cheekily references the artist's meticulous process but also her tireless quest for a human-less utopia devoid of interpersonal suffering. As if conjured from an alternate dimension, these remarkable creatures don't just occupy the gallery space as much as they completely transform the environment into a magical habitat. Viewers will find themselves lured into and enchanted by the resoundingly vivid world of de Rosamel’s creation.

A stunning display of whimsy and imagination, Everything Takes Forever draws upon 12+ years of de Rosamel's experience working exclusively in ceramics. Similarly evident is her ongoing interest in natural history, which informs her subject matter and process alike. When breathing new life into each form, she combines modern techniques with prehistoric materials such as clay, pigment, wood, and other found objects. It all goes to render an immersive ecosystem with multi-faceted potential, whereby the flora and fauna are gloriously diverse but also unified through a clear artistic vision.

The exhibit also finds de Rosamel embracing the innocence of her childhood and the sense of idealism that we often lose over time. In the world she's created, politics, greed, and other forms of friction don't exist because humans don't exist. In their place is a winsome and biodiverse kingdom of animal and plant life, rendered with an approachable touch so as to call subconscious attention to the devastating impacts of mankind. In an interview with VoyageLA, she shared, “I often find myself reflecting on the ongoing loss of real species we are living through, wishing I could bring my creatures to life and repopulate the planet.”

Godeleine de Rosamel is a French artist based in Los Angeles, California. Born in Lille, France, in 1968, de Rosamel’s passion for art began early when she was just a child drawing animals and taking her first ceramics class at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. In 1986, she attended the Ecole deRecherche Graphique (ERG) in Brussels, Belgium, where she graduated with a fine arts degree and began a career as a children’s book illustrator. Her whimsical illustrations have been featured in a number of books in France and Belgium. In 2001, she moved to Los Angeles and continued her illustration practice for several years until she decided to create ceramic sculptures. In 2014, she
exhibited her work for the first time in a group show at Giant Robot in Los Angeles.

The opening reception for Everything Takes Forever will be held at Chefas Projects on Friday, April 28th from 5-8pm. Masks and social distancing practices are encouraged. Chefas Projects is located in Portland, Oregon at 134 SE Taylor Street on the first floor of the Taylor Works building. The exhibition will be on view through May 27, 2023 and is free and open to the public.
