Cody Hudson’s brightly rendered paintings, drawings, and steel sculptures explore the emotional associations of shape and color. His hard-edged forms echo the playful collages of Henri Matisse, at times evoking flora and vessels but often remaining open-ended regarding their subjects. Hudson’s work ranges from small-scale prints to murals, including a major commission by the Chicago Transit Authority as part of its 2006 Arts in Transit program. In 2007, Hudson had his first solo museum exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, which contextualized his practice by linking it to skateboarding and other elements of contemporary youth culture. The artist’s lifetime immersion in punk and zine culture is evident in his embrace of graphic shapes and freeform compositions. He also runs Struggle Inc., a graphic studio that has collaborated with brands like Nike and Stüssy.
