Taking the familiar and subverting it, my practice embraces failure, confusion and the absurd to reconsider relationships between disparate ideas. What I create is visual turbulence, but what shakes out are double entendres, distortions of pop culture, and sincere joy for insignificant things. My work celebrates minor idiosyncrasies as the tie that binds.
My work has for several years illustrated an interest in the passage of time and the inevitably of change. There is something about portraiture that allows romantic notions of permanence and legacy to contradict this idea. In contrast, the enduring qualities of plastic bags are deeply sinister. Bringing the two together has brought me to the conclusion that plastic bags are probably the unflinching legacy of human civilization that I hoped art would be. That bittersweet contradiction is everything I wanted this work to be. - Brian Donnelly
