KELLEN CHASUK

SUMMER STAYCATION

GALLERY ANNEX  |  JULY 7 -29, 2017

This July, Stephanie Chefas Projects is delighted to present Portland based artist Kellen Chasuk in the Gallery Annex with 'Summer Staycation'.  In her latest collection of work, Chasuk explores one's sense of self that materializes during private moments behind closed doors. With each thick layer of acrylic paint, she breaks down the absurdity of her most common fears, taking on semi-serious subject matter including death, gender, and body image. It's all brought to life by way of vivid color and detail with playful undertones. The result is a singular vision that beautifully tackles heavyweight themes with striking approachability.

"I make art that aims to untangle my ever-changing view of the world as I move into adulthood through representation of everyday thoughts, objects, and textures," says Chasuk. "Humor is essential to understanding the work- as it is rooted in self-awareness and offers essential room for growth. Most of the subject matter is derived from an accumulation of visual and academic knowledge related to anything from television, advertising, fabric patterns, art history, to gender and personal relationships, plus finding wherever I fit in. Creating a visual response allows me to hold on to my own warped view of things and creates agency for myself and the viewer. My intention is to call attention to the subjectiveness of the human experience through manipulating traditional painting, sculpture, and media techniques. The output being, hopefully, a moment of reflection, a laugh, a relatable discomfort, or a newfound comfort."

The opening reception for 'Summer Staycation' will be held at Stephanie Chefas Projects on Friday, July 7th from 7-10pm. Stephanie Chefas Projects is located in Portland, Oregon at 305 SE 3rd Avenue on the second floor of the Urban Row building. The exhibition will be on view through July 29, 2017 and is free and open to the public.
