Founded by arts writer and arts activist Jennifer Rabin (Willamette Week, Oregon ArtsWatch, Visual Art Source, Hyperallergic), Art Passport PDX is a program dedicated to encouraging more engagement in Portland's visual arts scene with the opportunity to win $1,600 towards building an art collection. To participate, members of the community collect stamps from the eight participating galleries to fill their art passport (available at Stephanie Chefas Projects and other participating galleries) before the June 15th deadline. To earn a stamp, simply have a conversation with gallery staff about their exhibitions and artists. More information can be found at www.artpassportpdx.com.
In addition to demystifying the white-box gallery world, one of the goals of the program is to nurture a new generation of art collectors. This includes spreading the word that most galleries accept payment plans, which means that it's possible to purchase one-of-a-kind art for small monthly payments. Stephanie Chefas Projects has put together a selection of artwork ranging from $100 – $1,000 for first-time collectors to peruse. These works have been proudly featured in previous exhibitions with the gallery and many are available for viewing in the Gallery Annex, please ask to see them during your visit.
